Young people have always been at the forefront of global movements to protect fundamental human rights—and now, they are leading the fight for environmental justice and climate rights. Climate rights are not just about protecting the environment; they are the umbrella under which all major civil rights and civil liberties are protected. A safe, livable climate is essential for realizing justice, equity, and dignity for all people, everywhere.

As queer, non-binary people, fighting for climate rights is deeply personal to us. LGBTQ+ communities, especially those already marginalized, will be among the hardest hit by the climate crisis. From displacement and resource scarcity to systemic discrimination in disaster response and recovery, the climate crisis exacerbates the inequalities we already face. Fighting for climate rights means fighting for the survival and dignity of queer communities and every vulnerable population.

Through Our Children’s Trust, young people are demanding their rights to a livable climate and creating legal precedent for climate justice worldwide. Last year, youth plaintiffs in  Held v. State of Montana  achieved a groundbreaking victory when Judge Seeley ruled entirely in their favor, setting a powerful precedent. This year, they appeared before the Montana Supreme Court to affirm their ruling. 

Across the globe, young climate champions are making history: from the Navahine v. Hawai‘i Department of Transportation Settlement Agreement to fully decarbonize Hawai‘i’s transportation system, to Sagoonick v. State of Alaska II , challenging the Alaska LNG megaproject. Cases like Natalie v. State of Utah, Genesis v. EPA, and La Rose v. His Majesty the King in Canada continue to push for transformative change in courts.

Together, we can amplify youth voices and power—investing in their work to secure the fundamental right to a livable planet. This fight is urgent. Today, two billion children’s lives are threatened by the climate crisis. We must act now to ensure a just, equitable future for all.
